MISSION LUTHERAN CHURCH

USHER POLICIES, PROCEDURES AND DUTIES

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Each team consists of at least four ushers for non-communion services and four to six ushers for communion services. Each team has a captain.

Each team is responsible for a designated service each month. There will be ten teams. One for each service for each Sunday of the month; from the first through the fifth Sunday, when applicable.

All team members should agree on a team dress code: formal or casual.

Be prompt! Arrive 20 minutes prior to the start of the service to complete the "PRIOR TO SERVICE" duties described below. (BE ON TIME!)

If you cannot usher on your Sunday, it is YOUR responsibility to:

Find a substitute

Inform the substitute of your team’s dress code

Inform your captain of your substitute’s name and phone number

Each team captain is responsible for his/her team following all policies, procedures and duties.

Team captains will be made aware of any changes made to policies, procedures and duties, and will be responsible for completely informing his/her team.

PRIOR TO THE SERVICE:

Wear an Usher badge and a Name tag.

Be a "second" greeter. Wear a smile and greet all members and guests.

Make sure Pastors have water in their glasses.

Position at least two ushers in the narthex to hand-out bulletins, and at least two ushers in the sanctuary to assist worshipers to their seats.

Position one usher by the far/side entrance to pass-out bulletins and monitor the door.

Cry room: clean-up and arrange; check the volume switch.

When in the narthex facing the sanctuary, please keep the left set of sanctuary doors closed before the service. There is a thermostat on that wall in the sanctuary that needs to be protected from the outside temperature.

We’ve removed a couple of chairs in the front row for wheelchair seating. Please make sure the adjacent chairs remain available for the appropriate family members.

DURING THE SERVICE:

When the pastor begins announcements, please close the narthex doors and monitor narthex noise. Also, close all but one of the four outside doors.

Close the side-door that leads from the narthex into the back, second level of the sanctuary.

Position at least one usher in the rear center during the entire service. Be aware of anyone’s immediate needs. This could be the pastor or any member of the congregation.

Position one usher in the narthex during the service. This is to assist late comers and other worshipers that use the side-door during the service.

Monitor and control traffic. Don’t allow any traffic during prayers!

Position one usher by the far/side entrance to monitor the door and traffic, especially when the children exit for children’s church during the second service.

Take attendance. Be sure to include pastors, organist, ushers, sound room person, cry room and nursery for complete attendance count. Also, include children’s chat children that exit for children’s church (second service).

Monitor thermostats(3) and adjust if needed for the comfort of worshippers.

OFFERING:

Two or three pairs are required for proper offering collection.

Each pair will work one of the six sections at a time, working from the front to the back. When completing a section, begin the next section down at the front.

After collection, remove the yellow prayer request cards and place them on the top of the top offering plate.

Ushers will walk the offering plates to the altar during the offertory.

COMMUNION (See the diagram in the narthex credenza):

Communion is served at both services on the first and third Sundays of the month.

Communion is served table-by-table for every communion service.

Two (or three) ushers will work the first three sections (first section 1, then 2, then 3) COUNTER-CLOCK-WISE and two (or three) ushers will work the last three sections (first section 4, then 5, then 6) CLOCK-WISE. Each section will be released from the front to the back.

One usher (the riser) will assist people from the pew and queue them (admit 12 people for each serving session). A second usher (the gate) will be positioned at the bottom of the aisle, manage the queue and release people to the altar. A third usher will be positioned down by the altar to direct people back to their seats. When using only four ushers, the gate will catch the eye of the first communicant and direct them appropriately.

AFTER THE SERVICE:

Open all four doors to the narthex during the benediction.

Straighten books and cards in pew racks.

Pick-up trash and dispose of used bulletins. (Exception: recycle worthy first service bulletins when the same for second service.)

SECOND SERVICE ONLY:

Place offering in bank bag in church safe and attendance count & worship forms in office on secretary’s desk.

OTHER:

After baptisms, two ushers will immediately move baptismal font to front wall between altar and narthex.

NO flash photography is allowed during the services. Please politely enforce. This is especially important with guests during baptisms. Inform them that they are welcome to pose with the participants after the service when flash is allowed.

Captains are responsible for having a complete team at their scheduled service. Contact the Usher Coordinator with any required mid-year team changes.

When attending a service you are not scheduled to usher, please volunteer to help if the scheduled team appears to be short-handed.

Special Holiday services require ushers. Please volunteer and cooperate.
